This large, beautifully soft embroidered Saami ralli quilt comes from the western side of India/Pakistan, created by people of the Sindh region. Dense rows of coloured stitches with characteristic interlaced motifs give the quilt a subtle pattern and a soft, superb quality feel.

Made from recycled saris layered together like a kantha, the decorative stitches are usually formed in rectangles, some with highly detailed bands of alternating patterns. This one is a relatively simple design but still incredibly intricate.

The side intended as the reverse is a superb beige and brown colour block, a feature in its own right showcasing the reverse of the coloured bands of stitches.

The front is a deep blue with an almost neon green border, featuring the distinct embroidery of the nomadic people who create these culturally significant quilts.

This rare embroidered ralli is in superb condition, with hardly any signs of use.

APPROX SIZE: 215cm x 160cm (85" x 63")

This is a one-off, completely unique design, so when it's gone it's gone! It's a true vintage piece, so expect imperfections, patched details, marks and worn sections that reveal the layers below. We do our best to photograph all the details but remember that you are purchasing a unique, vintage textile piece that has been handmade and used in the past.

Handmade in India/Pakistan

Late 20th Century vintage

Materials

100% recycled cotton
Kantha quilts have been made for centuries by artisans in rural India. They are handmade from layers of recycled hand printed sarees which are hand stitched together to create a reversible, one of a kind blanket.
Each one is completely unique and they come in different sizes, thicknesses and qualities.
Some are at least a few generations old and show all the signs of being loved in the past, with gives them a unique texture and softness. Others are more recent but in great condition, with fewer signs of use.
We hand select our kantha quilts for their bright colours, versatile sizes and unique patterns, and photograph them in as much detail as possible so that you can see the beautiful features of each one.
We wash them to remove as many marks as possible, and we will sometimes patch over any large holes using offcuts of kantha quilts, using the same technique as the original artisans would have.
