This quilt was a bit of a mystery! Check out the writing in the middle- it's a clue to where and when it was made.

Originally made as wedding blankets, this one was lovingly used and cared for. The pink fabric has faded over time from a bright red to a mellow pink, characteristic of high quality natural madder dyes used in the late 19th Century.

The white and blue back is a handloom cotton, probably from old saris. The blue looks like a faded indigo.

It's possible that the faded red fabric is the famous Turkey Red used for quilts throughout the 19th Century, made in the UK and France and exported globally, including India/ Bengal. This red dyed cotton was known for its colourfastness and deep red shade, created by a complex natural dyeing process.

The writing in the middle is the two names of the wedding couple written in Bengali: Mohammed (mr) Kasam Ali and Mossamat (miss) Anuaaba Khatun

These names are from the old traditional North East Naogaon region of Bangladesh, possibly even a village called Nagar (source: several helpful Bengali speakers)

With all this information it has finally been possible to identify the origin of these quilts with their fine outline stitched embroidery, islamic patterns and distinctive colour.

A true collector's piece, this one has been meticulously cleaned and a small stained blue area remains in one corner but it is in remarkable condition for its age.

SIZE: 210cm x 110cm (82" x 44")

Perfect to drape over the end of a UK double bed (US full) as shown.

As a true vintage textile made to be used, it shows the charm of its past life. Expect small imperfections, patches, and worn areas where the layers of fabric peek through, these are not flaws, but part of its history and character.

This is a one-off design, when it’s gone, it’s gone!

Handmade in India, 20th Century

Materials

100% recycled cotton
Kantha quilts have been made for centuries by artisans in rural India. They are handmade from layers of recycled hand printed sarees which are hand stitched together to create a reversible, one of a kind blanket.
Each one is completely unique and they come in different sizes, thicknesses and qualities.
Some are at least a few generations old and show all the signs of being loved in the past, with gives them a unique texture and softness. Others are more recent but in great condition, with fewer signs of use.
We hand select our kantha quilts for their bright colours, versatile sizes and unique patterns, and photograph them in as much detail as possible so that you can see the beautiful features of each one.
We wash them to remove as many marks as possible, and we will sometimes patch over any large holes using offcuts of kantha quilts, using the same technique as the original artisans would have.
