Originally made as a wedding blanket, this beautifully embroidered sujni kantha was lovingly used and cared for. The red fabric retains its bright hue, contrasting with intricate stitching in white cotton

Unlike the other two in the collection, the fabric is much later, dyed with a synthetic red rather than natural dyes, making this likely to be a mid-20th Century quilt.

The white back is probably from an old sari.

This design has a lotus flower in the middle , traditionally seen on white antique nakshi kanthas, with extraordinarily fine white stitching creating the rest of the pattern. In true Islamic kantha style, one area has a contrast area stitched in green thread.

A true collector's piece probably originating from the North East Naogan region of Bangladesh, this one has been meticulously cleaned. A few small marks remain on the reverse but it is otherwise in beautiful condition for its age.

SIZE: 190cm x 120cm (75" x 48")

Perfect to drape over the end of a UK double bed (US full) as shown.

As a true vintage textile made to be used, it shows the charm of its past life. Expect small imperfections, patches, and worn areas where the layers of fabric peek through, these are not flaws, but part of its history and character.

This is a one-off design, when it’s gone, it’s gone!

Handmade in India, 20th Century

Materials

100% recycled cotton
Kantha quilts have been made for centuries by artisans in rural India. They are handmade from layers of recycled hand printed sarees which are hand stitched together to create a reversible, one of a kind blanket.
Each one is completely unique and they come in different sizes, thicknesses and qualities.
Some are at least a few generations old and show all the signs of being loved in the past, with gives them a unique texture and softness. Others are more recent but in great condition, with fewer signs of use.
We hand select our kantha quilts for their bright colours, versatile sizes and unique patterns, and photograph them in as much detail as possible so that you can see the beautiful features of each one.
We wash them to remove as many marks as possible, and we will sometimes patch over any large holes using offcuts of kantha quilts, using the same technique as the original artisans would have.
