This heavy kantha quilt was hand crafted many years ago in Bengal using layers of white sari fabric, with intricate geometric patterns hand sewn with tiny stitches known as "lohori" or wave pattern.

Lohori is one of the oldest forms of kantha, dating back to at least the early 19th Century (although this one would have been made at a later date, probably around the late 19th to early 20th Century).

It looks simple and plain but this kind of quilt is astounding up close with some of the most superb geometric stitching to be found in any type of kantha.

This one features a detailed zig zag pattern in pink and black. The minuscule stitching mirrors the pattern almost exactly on both sides, a skill that takes years of practice to master.

Different colours of thread in grey-black and deep pink create a subtle pattern from a distance, easily mistaken for a simple weave.

This one has some minor damage to the edges as shown but is otherwise in beautiful condition with a softness from regular use. The sturdy structure means it still has many, many decades of useable life in it.

APPROX SIZE: 210cm x 130cm (83" x 51")

Ideal for a double bed or just about for a UK king size

This is a one-off, completely unique design, so when it's gone it's gone! It's a true vintage piece, so expect imperfections, patched details, marks and worn sections that reveal the layers below. We do our best to photograph all the details but remember that you are purchasing a unique, vintage textile piece that has been handmade and used in the past.

Handmade in India

Materials

100% recycled cotton
Kantha quilts have been made for centuries by artisans in rural India. They are handmade from layers of recycled hand printed sarees which are hand stitched together to create a reversible, one of a kind blanket.
Each one is completely unique and they come in different sizes, thicknesses and qualities.
Some are at least a few generations old and show all the signs of being loved in the past, with gives them a unique texture and softness. Others are more recent but in great condition, with fewer signs of use.
We hand select our kantha quilts for their bright colours, versatile sizes and unique patterns, and photograph them in as much detail as possible so that you can see the beautiful features of each one.
We wash them to remove as many marks as possible, and we will sometimes patch over any large holes using offcuts of kantha quilts, using the same technique as the original artisans would have.
